'Spraoi' is a scholarship scheme run by Conradh na Gaeilge in conjunction with Comhaltas Uladh to encourage young people (under 18 from the north) to attend Gaeltacht courses and to provide support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Conradh na Gaeilge aims to publicise the scholarship scheme and spread the word among schools, branches, community groups and the two Líonra Gaeilge in the north. Conradh na Gaeilge will offer a scholarship to the value of £250 STG for students from the north who intend to enrol in Gaeltacht courses this summer.

Criteria

  • This application requires written evidence which demonstrates the student's commitment to and involvement in Irish language life.
  • All aspects of this scheme, including the scheme’s process, will be completely transparent.
  • The scheme will focus on young people who are attending Irish-medium schools or who are studying Irish at school.
  • The scheme will then prioritise applications from students living in the Irish language development areas, Irish language network areas or in areas of Conradh na Gaeilge brances.
  • Scholarship allocation will strive to ensure, as far as is reasonably possible, fair geographic spread.
  • Allocation of scholarships will ensure, as far as is reasonably possible, a fair gender balance.
  • Eligibility is considered for Gaeltacht colleges which are located in official Gaeltacht areas only, as registered with the Department of Education and Skills.
  • No full scholarships will be awarded under this scheme.
  • Successful applicants will be free to choose which Gaeltacht college they wish to attend, so long as the college is recognised by the Department of Education and Skills.
  • Conradh na Gaeilge will assess each application as per the criteria set out.
  • This is a limited fund which is in high demand every year.
  • A maximum of 5 scholarships will be awarded to each school/group.
    • It will be at the discretion of Conradh na Gaeilge how many scholarships are awarded to each school/institution.
    • This is a competitive process and the number of scholarships awarded to each school will be dependent on the number of applications received.
  • We ask that the teacher/leader identify those students who qualify for the scheme and that they send the application form to them and them alone for completion by their parent/guardian.
