Workshops in the States
Thanks to funding from the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs and the Fulbright Commission of Ireland, Cultúr Club went to America in 2016.
Conradh na Gaeilge consulted and worked with the Irish-language community in the United States that winter to share information and advice on issues such as education, publicity, campaigning, and funding with other grassroots groups promoting the language.
Workshop Dates
We facilitated a series of eight community-building workshops with Irish-language and culture groups in different locations across America between 29 November – 11 December 2016. We wanted to focus on supporting grassroots Irish-language and culture groups in Ireland and abroad with practical advice and resources including a series of community workshops, and a support handbook.
All the workshops were open to the public and anyone with an interest in the promotion of the Irish language was welcome to attend any of them:
- Chicago, Illinois: 29 November 2016
- Wayne, New Jersey: 30 November 2016
- Albany, Nua Eabhrac: 3 December 2016
- Phoenix, Arizona: 4 December 2016
- Memphis, Tennessee: 6 December 2016
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: 7 December 2016
- Knoxville, Tennessee: 8 December 2016
- Los Angeles: 11 December 2016
Workshop Topics
We discussed topics such as how to finance and publicise Irish-language events, how to source teachers and run Irish classes, and how to organise a language rights campaign as well as ideas for social events through the medium of Irish, and action plans to strengthen and consolidate the local language community.
We also made a handbook and other Cultúr Club support materials available free of charge, which can be accessed here.
