Conradh na Gaeilge welcome the new Five Year Action Plan 2018–2022 for the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010-2030, launched by Minister for the Gaeltacht Joe McHugh, TD, in Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair today.
Niall Comer, President of Conradh na Gaeilge said: “Conradh na Gaeilge welcome the actions included in the Government Plan 2018–2022 for the Twenty Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010-2030, especially the actions to launch a pilot scheme for partial immersion education in English medium schools; a scholarship scheme for children from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend Irish language summer courses; and to provide additional funding for Tuismitheoirí na Gaeltachta, Comhar Naíonraí na Gaeltachta and others. It is a positive step that clear actions have been laid out in this plan and that there are definite deadlines set for them, which will facilitate the monitoring process.
We expect the State to provide appropriate resources in order to achieve each action laid out in this plan over the next five years.”
Julian de Spáinn, General Secretary, Conradh na Gaeilge:
“There are plenty of positive actions in this plan, which are to be commended. We are glad to see that there will be support for Irish Language Centres all over the country. The document also reconfirms that the State is driven and working to end the derogation on the use of the Irish language in the European Union by the end of 2021 and to achieve an Irish Language Act in the north.
Many opportunities for the Irish Language and for the Gaeltacht will arise from this plan if implemented correctly. Not only will there be employment opportunities for Irish Language speakers, but there will also be an increase in the provision of language rights to the public. Conradh na Gaeilge will work to ensure the achievement of the opportunities and rights included in the plan, and others that are not included in this plan.”
Conradh na Gaeilge look forward to playing their role in ensuring that this plan is implemented, alongside the State and other groups who are working towards the same goal.
