Irish Language and Gaeltacht Investment Plan, 2024-2029

The Plan →

In 2016, the first investment plan for the Irish Language and for the Gaeltacht was compiled and had two aims in particular:

  1. To stop the cutbacks in relation to the funding available for the Irish language and for the Gaeltacht which were implemented particularly between 2008 and 2016
  2. Ensure that investment worth an extra €18 million was made available for the Irish language and for the Gaeltacht to fund the proposals that were specified in the investment plan

Conradh na Gaeilge co-ordinated the campaign to ensure the proposals referenced in the investment plan were met and almost 90 Irish language and Gaeltacht groups supported the proposals referenced in the investment plan. A large number of these groups also took part in the campaign and helped with lobbying that involved meeting with politicians and helping to spread the word in various media organisations and amongst the general public.

The proposals referenced in the plan were advanced with the Government in the north and south on a regular basis. These proposals were discussed with hundreds of politicians including Dáil Deputies, Seanadóirí, Members of the Legislative Assembly, Local Authority Councillors, Members of the European Parliament and others. The campaigning took place particularly at the SEAS events (campaigning days geared towards politicians) before budgets in the the north and south were announced. The proposals were also highlighted during the general elections held in the north and south between 2016 and 2022.

There is now a need for a new plan that builds on the proposals and outcomes of the first investment plan. The new plan looks ahead on what will be required for the Irish language and the Gaeltacht in the coming years. The aim of this plan is to build ambition for the language and to secure funding to ensure its sustainability, so as to bring about a better future for the Irish language and the Gaeltacht in the years ahead.
