Pádraig Mac Fhearghusa Re-Elected

Delegates have re-elected Pádraig Mac Fhearghusa of the Tralee branch as President of Conradh na Gaeilge for the third year running at the organisation's annual Ard-Fheis in The Strand Hotel, Limerick today, 17 April 2010. Mac Fhearghusa won against rival candidate Seán Ó hAdhmaill of the Gaeil Óga branch who was running for the Conradh na Gaeilge Presidency for the first time.

Mac Fhearghusa is chair of the Tralee branch as well as an active member of both the Executive and Standing Committee of Conradh na Gaeilge for many years. He is the noted editor of the monthly magazine Feasta published by Clódhanna Teoranta, the Conradh's own publishing company.

Mac Fhearghusa's experience and work with Conradh na Gaeilge to date will stand to him in the year ahead as President Mac Fhearghusa is looking to strengthen the goals laid out in the Draft 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language; to strengthen the grassroots of the organisation; and to improve the teaching of Irish in the education system.

Pádraig Mac Fhearghusa, Conradh na Gaeilge's President said: "It is obvious that certain senior civil servants are intent on doing away with Irish in the state system if they are given half a chance; it is shameful that the Department of Education and Skills did not give recognition to a single Irish-medium school to open this year, for example, and Conradh na Gaeilge and the Irish-speaking community as a whole must defend the language against this enmity as fiercely as we can and support the likes of Gaelscoil Ráth Tó in Ratoath that is to open without recognition this September."

The President of the Conradh is the chair of Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí, Tralee which he helped found, and he also had a hand in the founding of three other Gaelscoils. More importantly maybe, he is the past chair and founder of Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn, Tralee, a school that took a stand against the Department of Education's attempt to ban total early immersion education through Irish with the 0044/2007 Circular.

Mac Fhearghusa says: "I will be working with the local community to develop the grassroots of Conradh na Gaeilge. Community and co-operation is the only way forward and Conradh na Gaeilge depends on the support of the people to stand firm against the hostility the language suffers at the hands of the state."

Members of Conradh na Gaeilge wish to sincerely congratulate the President on his re-election and look forward to working with him in the year ahead.
