New Gaeilgeoirí Head Up Bookshop

There are big changes afoot for one of Ireland's most renowned Irish-language institutions - Conradh na Gaeilge's bookshop, An Siopa Leabhar at 6 Harcourt Street, Dublin 2 - under the fresh new management of Daragh Ó Tuama and his recently-appointed assistant, Cian Taaffe.

Daragh Ó Tuama follows in the footsteps of former manager Máire Ní Laoi, who retired in June of this year after 38 years of service in the bookshop, and he has an innovative, long-term vision for An Siopa Leabhar that will see it developed as a shopping facility of excellence for the Irish-speaking community, both at home in the capital and abroad. Not only are there plans to significantly expand the online bookshop through the central website of Conradh na Gaeilge at www.cnag.ie, but new categorisation and scanning systems are already being brought into An Siopa Leabhar.

Daragh Ó Tuama, Manager of Conradh na Gaeilge's bookshop says: "I'm very excited personally by the prospect of expanding and developing the services of An Siopa Leabhar to ensure that the shop functions in a simpler, more streamlined and more effective way for the Irish-speaking community, fluent speakers and language-learners alike."

Mr. Ó Tuama hails from Dublin and has been involved in various aspects of Irish-language life over the years, before becoming manager of An Siopa Leabhar. As well as presenting Irish-language programmes with radio stations such as Newstalk, Daragh presented the TG4 television programme MPH and worked as a development officer with Glór na nGael until recently, where he had responsibility for the competitions at Level 3, Global Gaeilge and the development of the Údar.ie website.

Cian Taaffe has just begun his job as assistant in An Siopa Leabhar alongside Ó Tuama, and he is quite the multitalented Irish-speaker; Taaffe is a comedian, an actor, a presenter, a producer, and an author who won a prize for writing the drama An Ghealtacht at the Irish-language drama festival for third level colleges, Féile Drámaíochta na gColáistí Tríú Leibhéil, in 2009 and he has more recently won the Lucky Duck award at the Battle of the Axe Comedy Club earlier this year.

Cian Taaffe, An Siopa Leabhar Assistant says: "We're using the latest technology to expand the range of books and Irish-language goods we provide through the online shop at www.cnag.ie at the moment, and we also have big plans to sell more t-shirts, CDs, DVDs, posters, children's games and more from An Siopa Leabhar at 6 Harcourt Street in the coming months."
