Global Celebration of the Irish Language: Connecting Speakers and Learners Across the World Through #TrasnanadTonnta
Conradh na Gaeilge and the Ireland Canada University Foundation (ICUF) are thrilled to announce the official launch today of the #TrasnanadTonnta campaign, an exciting global celebration of the Irish language. The campaign will be officially launched live on YouTube at 16:30 Irish time from the University of Ottawa, with the event hosted by Clíodhna Ní Chorráin. Irish Ambassador to Canada, John Concannon, will also take part in the online event that will be streamed from Seachtain na Gaeilge’s YouTube page: www.youtube.com/@snagaeilge
#TrasnanadTonnta is an international online campaign aimed at connecting Irish speakers and learners across the globe through social media and virtual events. This year’s collaboration with the long-running Comhrá campaign, which has been bringing Irish speakers together since 2013, promises to be a truly global celebration, running from October 21st to 25th, 2024. Participants from all corners of the world are encouraged to get involved by sharing posts in Irish, participating in online events, and joining conversations celebrating the Irish language.
This year’s campaign, under the theme of “Storytelling,” invites participants to share their personal stories, memories, and reflections through the Irish language, no matter their proficiency. It is an inclusive space for everyone, from fluent speakers to those just beginning their journey with the language.
Minister of State at Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media , Thomas Byrne, expressed his excitement for the campaign:
"I am delighted to officially launch #TrasnanadTonnta 2024, a celebration of the Irish language that connects speakers and learners from across the globe. This year’s theme of ‘Storytelling’ reflects our rich tradition of sharing and preserving stories through our language. Whether you are fluent or just starting to learn, I encourage everyone to take part, úsáid cúpla focail, and share their story.”
Paula Melvin, President of Conradh na Gaeilge said:
“The coming together of Comhrá and #TrasnanadTonnta this year gives branches and members of Conradh na Gaeilge around the world the opportunity to share their story about the Irish language. I greatly commend the groups across the island and around the world who work every day to promote the Irish language. I hope they will all have the opportunity to take part in #TrasnanadTonnta this year."
James Kelly, Chief Executive Officer of ICUF, said:
“ICUF are delighted to be working with Conradh na Gaeilge on #TrasnanadTonnta this year. The online campaign will celebrate the Irish language both in Ireland and all over the world. No matter what level of Irish you have, we hope everyone will use their Gaeilge online and share their stories during #TrasnanadTonnta."
The campaign will feature a variety of events, competitions, and opportunities to connect with fellow Irish speakers. Whether participating through online conversations, social media posts, or engaging in virtual events, #TrasnanadTonnta encourages everyone to celebrate and express their love of the Irish language.
