Students recognised for their achievements in promoting Irish on campus by Conradh na Gaeilge, USI and the Higher Education Authority
Students and third level groups were in the Temple Bar Hotel tonight to be recognised for their achievements on behalf of the Irish language as part of the Gníomhaí Gaeilge mentoring and awards scheme. Student Unions and Irish Language Societies received a total of 19 awards for their work on campuses across the country for the Irish language, and 27 awards were presented to individual students for their personal achievements in Irish language activism.
Speaking today, Paula Melvin, President of Conradh na Gaeilge commented:
“Like many others, I first registered with Conradh na Gaeilge during my undergraduate degree, a decision that greatly enriched my life. I am extremely proud of the work we continue to undertake at third level with young people. I am thrilled that we were able to continue with the fantastic Gníomhaí Gaeilge scheme this year that empowers our university branches to support the Irish language. We are grateful to the Higher Education Authority for their continued support.”
Chloe Ní Ruairc, Gníomhaí Gaeilge Coordinator said:
“I am delighted to be here this evening amongst the mentors and mentees who have worked really hard throughout the year to promote the Irish Language in their third level institutions and within the community as well. I'm so happy as coordinator of the scheme to be able to present the students with awards for their hard work.”
Gníomhaí Gaeilge is facilitated by Conradh na Gaeilge with support from USI and the Higher Education Authority, and is in its second year. Gníomhaí Gaeilge was founded to connect third level students with mentors to support them in their work for the Irish language, and to encourage students through a recognition and awards scheme.
Registration for Gníomhaí Gaeilge is now open for the '23/24 academic year at cnag.ie/gg. Individuals, Irish language societies, student unions and other groups within third level institutions can register for the scheme. Participation can be done through Irish or English.
