‘An exceptional award for an exceptional person’ says Conradh na Gaeilge president, as Ard-Fheis provides platform to promote ‘Ciste Tacaíochta Rónáin’

Fundraiser launched for renowned Irish language broadcaster and journalist

Renowned RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta broadcaster Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí has been named as the 2023 recipient of the Conradh na Gaeilge Gradam an Uachtaráin (President’s Award). The award is to be announced as part of the Conradh na Gaeilge Ard-Fheis taking place this weekend, Friday-Sunday 24-26 February at the Abbey Court Hotel, An tAonach, Tiobráid Árann. Gradam an Uachtaráin is an annual award, presented each year to a member of the Irish language or Gaeltacht community who makes a tremendous impact on the Irish language. This year’s award recognises the remarkable work of Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí.

Speaking today, Paula Melvin, President of Conradh na Gaeilge, commented:

“Everyone at Conradh na Gaeilge was delighted when Rónán agreed to accept this award at the beginning of the month. It is difficult to put into words the tremendous impact Rónán has had and continues to have on the Irish language and Gaeltacht communities. He is a community and Irish language pioneer, a revolutionary voice who has inspired thousands over recent decades. Rónán has always stood shoulder to shoulder with national and local language rights campaigns. He played a central role as ‘Fear an Tí’ for the 2014 ‘Dearg le Fearg’ rally in Dublin and has been to the fore supporting the Dream Dearg campaign for language rights in the north. Rónán has also inspired us time and time again on Raidió na Gaeltachta and at his infamous Cabaret Craiceáilte, Féile Craiceáilte and other events and festivals over the years. We have, of course, heard of Rónán’s ongoing fight against cancer, and the unprecedented community outpouring of solidarity and generosity towards Rónán. Rónán has always stood with us, and now we will stand with him. This is an exceptional award for an exceptional person. We now have an opportunity through the Ard-Fheis to promote the ongoing campaign to raise funds for Rónán’s treatment, Ciste Tacaíochta Rónáin, and of course, our thoughts will be with Rónán and his family in the coming weeks and months.”

Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí is a well-known and much loved Irish language radio presenter from the Donegal Gaeltacht, broadcasting from na Doirí Beaga in Gaoth Dobhair for RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. Rónán has been front and centre of many language, music and community events and campaigns, including the Cabaret Craiceáilte, and has won many prizes and awards for his contribution to the Irish language broadcasting sector.

Gradam an Uachtaráin will be announced at 9pm on Saturday 25th February as part of the Conradh na Gaeilge Ard-Fheis. Although Rónán cannot be present, all at Conradh na Gaeilge will be keeping him in our thoughts in the coming weeks and months.
