Congressman Brendan Boyle joins Conradh na Gaeilge call for immediate implementation of Irish language legislation and outstanding language commitments

21 May 2021

Conradh na Gaeilge has met with Congressman Brendan F. Boyle online to discuss the outstanding Irish language legislation from the New Decade New Approach Agreement and the ongoing implementation of the “resolute action” for the language enshrined in the Good Friday Agreement and the 2006 St Andrew’s Agreement. Alongside representatives from Conradh na Gaeilge, Domhnall Ó Catháin, President of the Brehon Law Society of New York, was also present at yesterday’s meeting (Thursday 20/5/2021).

Dr Niall Comer, President, Conradh na Gaeilge, said:

“Conradh na Gaeilge considers it extremely important to consistently engage with Irish-America, which has played a key role in brokering and supporting our main agreement here in Ireland in recent decades. Yesterday we had the opportunity to brief Congressman Boyle on our ongoing campaign for language rights and legislation here and we were delighted to receive his support in our call for immediate implementation of outstanding commitments regarding Irish language language as set out in the New Decade New Approach Agreement and St Andrew’s Agreement. Conradh na Gaeilge will now be seeking further meetings in the coming weeks with political representatives and groups in the US to increase awareness and support for language rights here.”

Following the meeting, Congressman Brendan Boyle commented:

“It was great to meet the Irish language delegation this week, where we discussed outstanding commitments from previous agreements with regards to the Irish language. I fully support the immediate implementation of all outstanding commitments to the Irish language as outlined in last year’s New Decade New Approach and in the 2006 St Andrew’s Agreement, as underpinned by the Good Friday Agreement. I look forward to raising these issues in the coming weeks.”
