“Translation Hub only the beginning of what’s needed to ensure language rights” - CnaG
Conradh na Gaeilge has welcomed the launch today (Monday 19th April) of the new Central Translations Hub by Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey MLA. The Translations hub was a commitment made in the New Decade New Approach agreement in January 2020. The new Hub means there will now be centralised language infrastructure capable of providing language and translation services to Government Departments, Arm’s Length Bodies, Local Government and Public Bodies.
Dr Niall Comer, President, Conradh na Gaeilge, said:
“Conradh na Gaeilge welcomes this substantial announcement regarding the launch of the new Translations Hub. Conradh na Gaeilge has been calling for such a translations centre for a number of years, including in our 2017 Irish language Act Discussion Document; namely a centralised resource servicing the language and translation needs of Government departments, public bodies and local councils, all in a consistent, effective and efficient way. Conradh na Gaeilge will monitor the rollout of new Hub to ensure the highest standards of language and translation services are being delivered to communities going forward.”
Conchúr Ó Muadaigh, Advocacy Manager, Conradh na Gaeilge, added:
“It is encouraging to see the launch today of the new Translations Hub. This Hub must now ensure first class language support between government bodies and local communities. This is only the beginning, however, of what is needed to ensure language rights here. Both the Irish language legislation and the Irish language strategy, committed to in New Decade New Approach alongside this Translations Hub, remain outstanding almost 16 months on. There is, therefore, much more to do.”
In the meantime, Conradh na Gaeilge awaits an official response to the Pre-Action Protocol Letter (PAPL) sent to the Executive 29 March 2021 regarding the outstanding Irish language Strategy. The Executive has 21 days to respond to the PAPL.
