Raidió Rí-Rá To Broadcast On DAB!

The first ever Irish-language chartstation will begin broadcasting live on the Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) platform in Dublin and Waterford on 01 July 2012, whereby Raidió Rí-Rá will be the first and only Irish-language youth station broadcasting on the new system. Raidió Rí-Rá will be available on DAB in Cork and Limerick before the end of this year too, and nationally in the future.

Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) is a digital radio technology for broadcasting radio stations, a platform in use in almost 40 different countries to broadcast current radio services as well as broadcasting a range of added new services. Analogue signals are converted to a digital format and in addition to providing a better sound quality than FM, DAB uses the radio spectrum more effectively to offer a wider range of stations for listeners, among which Raidió Rí-Rá will be the first Irish-language youth station on the system.

Traic Ó Braonáin, Chairperson of Raidió Rí-Rá says: "Raidió Rí-Rá has been leading the way in the provision of music and Irish-language services for young people in Ireland from the get-go, by developing a whole station online, by providing a free-to-download iPhone application for listeners, by utilising social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, and now by broadcasting on DAB.

"It is essential that young people in Ireland have the choice of Irish available to them as part of any new communications' project such as DAB, and Raidió Rí-Rá hopes to provide the best possible radio service, full-time and on a national basis, on DAB, FM and digital television systems in the future."

The chartstation is dedicated to providing the highest standard of radio to young people though Irish: as well being nominated for a Barr 50 Gnó le Gaeilge 2010 award recognising its excellence in business through Irish after only two years broadcasting, Raidió Rí-Rá received nominations for the prestigious Oireachtas na Gaeilge communications' awards in 2009, 2011 and again this year. There was also a full-page article on Raidió Rí-Rá on Paper 1 of the Irish 2012 Junior Certificate exam.

Ó Braonáin continues: "475 million people have access to digital audio broadcasting worldwide so far, and as such it is the perfect medium for taking Irish out of the classroom, where it is seen solely as a school subject, and broadcasting Raidió Rí-Rá directly into the ordinary daily lives of young people in Ireland, through music, through talk radio and through great fun on the radio.

"Raidió Rí-Rá is the only station in the world broadcasting all the hit music from the charts through the medium of Irish, presenting live programmes by young people, for young people 24/7."

The digital audio broadcasting platform is only one way through which you can listen to the first Irish-language chartstation for young people; Raidió Rí-Rá is still available all year round online at www.rrr.ie, on the iPhone with the latest free-to-download application from iTunes, on all Nokia phones and on Android phones via the TuneIn application, broadcasting a full schedule of live programmes Monday - Friday mixed with Rí-Rá Spórt, celebrity gossip and hits from the from charts.
