The Irish language and the Internet: Celebrate Lá na Meán Sóisialta

Seize the Social Media Day - today is Lá na Meán Sóisialta! #LNMS19

Lá na Meán Sóisialta (Social Media Day) celebrates the Irish language on the internet.  With 6,700 languages spoken online, Irish is among the top 100 most used languages on the internet, with a thriving presence, ever-growing online communities, and countless resources for speakers and learners alike.

Among many other Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia events, Lá na Meán Sóisialta will be held this Wednesday, 6 March, in The Mansion House.  Hundreds of people interacted with the live event last year, using the hashtag #LNMS19.  A panel of special guests - including Michael Darragh MacAuley (Dublin footballer), Helen McHugh (Irish Language Technology Project Manager, DCU) and Oisín Ó Duinn (Gaelchultúr, Duolingo), will speak at the event about the growth and development of our native language's presence on line.

The Lord Mayor Nial Ring said;
“We are delighted to host this event in The Mansion House.  The Irish language is always welcomed here and across the city.  Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia is a brilliant initiative to present an Ghaeilge to the wider community, and it welcomes speakers of all levels.  Lá na Meán Sóisialta shows that the language is thriving, not only here in Ireland but across the world, among learners and speakers online; conversations which often transform in to real life communities too.  It shows that the language is very much alive, innovative and adaptable.
Lá na Meán Sóisialta is being held as part of the international festival, Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia 2019.  Last year, over 3000 public events were held as part of the celebration - we hope to exceed that number this year!  The festival was launched nationally with an event in Woodquay on the 10 February, and internationally in the London Irish Centre on the first day of the festival, 1 March.

This year, Tracy Clifford of 2fm; Michael Darragh MacAuley, Dublin footballer; Sibéal Ní Chasaide, a young singer from Ráth Chairn; and Linda Ervine, Irish Language Development Officer for East Belfast, are ambassadors for the festival, representing Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia various backgrounds and relationships with the language.

Further information about the festival and schedule of events can be found at www.snag.ie.  The festival is in full swing from now until the 17 March.  Foras na Gaeilge are the primary funding body supporting Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia 2019.
