“Government dedication to the Irish language and the Gaeltacht” discussion topic for Ard Fheis Chonradh na Gaeilge

Ard-Fheis Seminar, Tralee, 2018

“125 Years On - Government Dedication to the Irish language and the Gaeltacht” is to be the Seminar topic at Ard Fheis Chonradh na Gaeilge 2018, the organisation’s annual conference held in February each year.  The Ard Fheis will be held in Tralee, Co. Kerry, this year.

Máirín Ní Ghadhra, broadcaster with Raidió na Gaeltachta, will act as chairperson on the evening, and the panel will consist of State Minister, Seán Kyne; Bríd Smith, TD People Before Profit; Micheál Martin, Fianna Fáil Leader; and Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, TD, Sinn Féin.  Between them they will discuss the Government’s dedication to, and attitude towards, the Irish language over the years.

Dr Niall Comer, President of Conradh na Gaeilge says:

“We are looking forward to the Seminar, and the discussion between politicians and those in attendance at the Ard Fheis.  It will be interesting to hear the various attitudes of the political parties as they come together to discuss, in Irish, what the Irish Government has done and has left to do for the Irish language and the Gaeltacht areas in the past 125 years.  It is an excellent opportunity to hear the opinions of members of Conradh na Gaeilge, and to present them to the various political parties..”

Julian de Spáinn, General Secretary of Conradh na Gaeilge says:

“The Ard Fheis provides an opportunity for our members to present their requests to us, and we are looking forward to discussing their proposed motions.  We will be discussing motions regarding the role of Conradh na Gaeilge in the request for an Irish language act in Stormont; investment and support for language planning in the Gaeltacht areas; request that Irish medium education will be available at all levels to any young person who wishes to receive and education through Irish; and the proposition that there should be and “Irish Language Office” in each local authority in the 32 counties.”

This year, the Ard Fheis will be held in Meadowlands Hotel in Tralee, Co. Kerry, Friday 23rd - Saturday 24th February.  As well as the seminar, there will be workshops for single members and braches of Conradh na Gaeilge; a morning talk over breakfast with Mait Ó Brádaigh, on the subject “Challenges and Opportunities that arise from the Policy on Gaeltacht Education”; elections for Presidency and the Executive Committee; and Seachtain na Gaeilge with Energia will be launched.  All members and branches of Conradh na Gaeilge will be entitled to a vote in the elections, and all are welcome to take part in the family oriented events that will be held from 2pm in Tralee town on Saturday to launch Seachtain na Gaeilge.
