Halla Íde is the Irish-language centre for Limerick and it houses Naíonra Ríocht na Sí, An Siopa Leabhar and an information office as well as classrooms and an entertainment venue called An Chistin in the basement.
The Irish-language bookshop is open 6 days a week and there is a substantial stock of books available to buy, with a particular emphasis on books from or about Limerick. Customers and visitors alike can have a cuppa in Halla Íde and the information office is a central point of contact for organising events, dealing with enquiries and for general communications. You're more than welcome to call in any day of the week!
The building was renovated in recent years and now boasts an excellent standard of facilities as well as Limerick's Irish-Language Community Scheme, managed by the Limerick City branch of Conradh na Gaeilge, Craobh Chathair Luimnigh. The best use is being made of these facilities to provide more support to Irish speakers in Limerick by offering additional recreational and educational services through Irish in an attractive setting, thereby nurturing the Irish-language community in the city and beyond.
The programme of events at Halla íde is endless and music, singing and dancing goes on downstairs in An Chistin on a regular basis, as well as dramas and poetry events. The traditional look of An Chistin was recently revamped and the space is in high demand, while An Siopa Leabhar is fitting for poetry readings, book launches, lectures, exhibitions, and other social events.
The running of Irish-language classes is at the heart of any centre such as Halla Íde and this service is also provided to the public with courses of various levels available every term.
