Cumann Gaelach Archive

The history of Cumainn Ghaelacha in colleges and universities is long established, with some branches over 100 years old. Since the early years of Conradh na Gaeilge there has been a longstanding relationship between the organisation and students - see here for the students sections in old editions of Claidheamh Soluis and Fáinne an Lae from the start of the 20th century.

Irish Language Societies

Conradh na Gaeilge is made up of over 200 branches in Ireland and abroad, working as part of a national movement for the Irish language. Branches are made up of people, usually volunteering, to achieve aims and goals. Some of the branches are focused on specific areas (like Craobh Chathair Luimnigh, Craobh Londan), and some are subject specific (like Craobh Na Gaeil Óga, Craobh Raidió Rí-Rá).

The Irish Language Officer plays an important role in the Students' Union. They are usually responsible for the Union's approach to the Irish language, and as the Union represents thousands of students, the Irish Language Officer is responsible for ensuring Irish language rights  for these thousands of people, as well as standing up for the Irish language and Irish speakers on campus.
